Many people believe that leading an eco-friendly life requires major lifestyle changes, more money and causes unnecessary inconveniences. But in reality, going green is not as complex as you may be thinking. Everyone can go green by making small changes to everyday habits and practices. Here are 5 simple ways to become more eco-friendly, without burning a hole in your pocket!
- THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE BUYING
Be conscious of what you buy. Be aware of how and where your purchases were produced by checking supply chains. Ask where your food or other products you purchase are sourced from if you’re unsure what kind of natural resources are consumed to produce and transport them. Products that are sourced from far away places, usually require more packaging materials and consume large amounts of fossil fuels to reach you. Instead, look for local options that will reduce your carbon footprint.
2. BE AWARE OF FAST FASHION
“Fast fashion” describes the process whereby clothing is created quickly to adapt to trends, often using materials that can be harmful to the environment. These clothes don’t last long and quickly end up in landfills. The fashion industry produces 20% of global wastewater and 10% of global carbon emissions.
3. BUY ONLY WHAT YOU NEED
Overconsumerism is a big reason why we generate so much trash everyday. Simply buying more things because there are some offers or discounts, will actually cost us and the environment more! In large cities food wastage and trash from packaging materials fillup large percentages of landfill spaces. That means more greenhouse gases are released and more harm to our environment. By being aware of how much you need and how much to buy, you not only spend less and save more but also help reduce the greenhouse gases. Next time you go to the supermarket or restaurant, be mindful ofthe quantity you purchase.
4. CARRY YOUR OWN REUSABLE SHOPPING BAG
Many shops and supermarkets provide their customers with single-use plastic bags to carry their goods. However, these bags end up harming the environment and are a major source of plastic pollution in our waterbodies. By carrying your own bag, you are not only reducing plastic waste but also protecting the marine biodiversity of our planet. Reusable bags are more cool and fashionable too! By using them, you can always make your own fashion statement and inspire others to do so.
5. SWITCH TO REUSABLE CUTLERY AND WATER BOTTLES
Whether you eat out or order in, you will probably get disposable cutlery with your meal. An easy solution is to turn down plastic cutlery and plastic bottles when eating out or travelling. Always carry your own reusable waterbottle. Speak up if you are served with unnecessary plastic cutlery when washable options may be available. Ask for reusable or paper coffee cups and leave behind those plastic coffee lids and straws!
